He was Governor General of Canada from 1888 to 1893 and during his final year in office donated a trophy to be awarded to the championship hockey club in Canada; the trophy came to be known as the Stanley Cup; originally the trophy was awarded to amateur teams but ultimately became symbolic of professional hockey supremacy; he was elected in 1945.
